At BURKELMAN, we are committed to making a difference in the world.

Now through December 31, 2014, BURKELMAN will donate 5% of net sales, towards The Africa Conservation School Project. The ACS Project is a joint effort between MASS Design Group and The African Wildlife Foundation to build schools in environmentally threatened areas in Africa.

Additionally, many of the fantastic designers and design companies that BURKELMAN features have donated items to be sold with 100% of the proceeds from the sale being given to The ACS Project.

Why Conservation & Education

Education is a powerful social investment for disrupting the cycle of poverty along with the resulting environmental degradation.

Children living in Africa’s rural areas often face two divergent paths: Those without education often exploit the natural resources around them to survive—cutting trees for charcoal, for example, or hunting wildlife for food—while those with access to education will have more opportunities to secure employment in the formal economy and no longer need to exploit their surrounding natural resources to build prosperous lives.

The Ilima school is built entirely from local labor and materials, and designed based on in-depth immersive research MASS Design conducted on-site and in collaboration with the local community. The building features a brand new, earthquake-safe, resilient brick mixture to ensure the building’s safety and longevity, as well as roof shingles fashioned from local trees.
